Additional Scholarship Information for Current MSU Students

Mississippi State scholarship students are required to maintain continuous, full-time enrollment of at least 12 credit hours per semester at MSU and the overall GPA as specified in their official scholarship offer letter. Enrollment and GPA will be checked at the end of each spring semester to determine scholarship renewal eligibility for the next academic year.

Should you not meet the renewal requirements of your scholarship(s), please note that all MSU students have the right to appeal the cancellation of their scholarship(s). A cancellation exception may be made in special or unusual circumstances such as death in the immediate family, personal injury, illness, or other situations as determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships and the University Scholarship Appeals Committee.

Information regarding the appeals process will be sent with cancellation notices at the end of each spring semester. Should you have questions regarding this process, contact the Scholarship Office at 662-325-3076, or by email at scholarships@msstate.edu

The Scholarship Appeals process only applies to academic scholarships. It does not include financial aid, state aid, private, or departmental awards.

Approved appeals are never guaranteed.

Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship Reinstatement Opportunity

Non-resident students whose GPA falls below the minimum 3.0 overall GPA will have the opportunity to earn back only the Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship, provided the student meets the following requirements:

  • Must return overall GPA to a 3.0 or higher
  • Must maintain continuous, full-time enrollment at MSU during the fall and spring semesters
  • Must have remaining semesters of Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship eligibility. Each fall/spring semester that passes while a student re-earns the Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship counts against the total semesters remaining

Once a student regains an overall 3.0 GPA, it is the student's responsibility to notify the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

All MSU students have the right to request an extension of their academic scholarship(s) should they not graduate within their allotted number of scholarship semesters. Extensions will only be considered if you have extenuating circumstances that prevented you from completing your degree within your allotted number of semesters. Typical adjustments to college life, financial hardship, job interference, major change, declaring a double major/minor, or the use of a scholarship semester during the summer are not considered extenuating circumstances.

To obtain the Scholarship Extension Request Form and all instructions for this process, students must contact the Scholarships Office at 662-325-3076 or by email at scholarships@msstate.edu

The Scholarship Extension process only applies to academic scholarships. It does not include financial aid, state aid, private, or departmental awards.

Approved extension requests are never guaranteed.

Academic scholarships do not automatically apply towards the summer semester. MSU students may request to use a semester of their academic scholarship eligibility towards a summer semester. However, we do not encourage students to do this unless they meet one of the criteria below:

  • Have participated in a co-op/internship during a fall or spring semester and are using a summer semester to catch up on coursework
  • Will be graduating early (or before their allotted number of scholarship semesters is up)
  • ***Is a non-resident student with an Alumni Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship

Applying your scholarship(s) for a summer term will expend one semester of your academic scholarship eligibility. Please note that this will make you responsible for covering any costs incurred after your final semester of academic scholarship eligibility.

Students wishing to use a semester of their academic scholarship eligibility towards the summer semester must contact the Scholarships Office to obtain the Scholarship Summer Request Form and all instructions on how to go through this process. Should you have questions regarding this process, contact the Scholarship Office at 662-325-3076, or by email at scholarships@msstate.edu

The Scholarship Summer Request Form only applies to academic scholarships. It does not include financial aid, state aid, private, or departmental awards.

***Non-resident students may request to use only their Alumni Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship towards a summer semester with no effect to their remaining semesters of academic scholarship eligibility.

During your last semester enrolled at MSU, you may be eligible to receive your academic scholarship(s) as a part-time student. A part-time student is a student who is taking less than 12 credit hours per semester at MSU. You must have at least one semester of scholarship eligibility remaining to submit this request.

Please note that submitting a Final Semester Part-Time Request means that your academic scholarship(s) will be prorated based on the number of hours in which you are enrolled.

Students wishing to submit a Final Semester Part-Time Request must contact the Scholarships Office to obtain the Final Semester Part-Time Request Form and all instructions on how to go through this process. Should you have questions regarding this process, contact the Scholarship Office at 662-325-3076, or by email at scholarships@msstate.edu

The Final Semester Part-Time Request Form only applies to academic scholarships. It does not include financial aid, state aid, private, or departmental awards.

MSU students who graduate early and who have semesters of scholarship eligibility remaining may qualify to receive their academic scholarship(s) during their first year of graduate school at MSU. To qualify, you must be admitted to a graduate degree seeking program at MSU immediately following your undergraduate graduation and be enrolled as a full-time graduate student (9 credit hours).

Should your Graduate Scholarship Request be approved, your academic scholarship(s) can only be applied for the number of scholarship semesters that you have remaining. However, if you have more than two semesters of academic scholarship eligibility remaining, you may only receive your academic scholarship(s) for your first year of graduate school.

If you are a non-resident student and receive a Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship and/or an Alumni Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship, any changes made to your residency status could result in the amount of your non-resident scholarship(s) being adjusted or cancelled even with an approved Graduate Scholarship Request. The Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship and/or Alumni Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship may not be combined with any other programs that waive the non-resident charges such as: Graduate Assistantships, Academic Common Market; Veteran, Service-Member, Dependent or Spouse Non-Resident Tuition Waiver; etc.

Students wishing to submit a Graduate Scholarship Request must contact the Scholarships Office to obtain the Graduate Scholarship Request Form and all instructions on how to go through this process. Should you have questions regarding this process, contact the Scholarship Office at 662-325-3076, or by email at scholarships@msstate.edu

The Graduate Scholarship Request Form only applies to academic scholarships. It does not include financial aid, state aid, private, or departmental awards.
