Students will be able to submit a FAFSA(r) earlier. Students will be able to complete the 2017-18 FAFSA as early as Oct. 1, 2016, rather than waiting until Jan. 1, 2017. The earlier submission date will be a permanent change, enabling students to complete and submit a FAFSA as early as October 1st of every year. To complete FAFSA go to fafsa.ed.gov.
Students will use earlier income information. Beginning with the 2017-18 FAFSA, students will be required to report income information from an earlier tax year. For example, on the 2017-18 FAFSA, students (and parents, as appropriate) will report their 2015 income information, rather than their 2016 income information, so the tax information should match. Don't forget to transfer the tax information directly from the IRS to your FAFSA. Using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool and transferring your tax information when completing the FAFSA will save you time and ensure that your data is accurate, lessening the chances of being asked to provide additional IRS documents to the financial aid office. All FAFSAs and any required supporting documentation received on or before March 1, 2017 will receive maximum consideration for financial aid.
The following table provides a summary of key dates as we transition to using the early FAFSA submission timeframe and earlier tax information.
