Request for Additional Direct Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan Due to Denial of Federal Direct (Parent) PLUS Loan

Dependent students are not normally eligible for the Additional Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan; however, the federal government has made the following exception. If Federal Direct Student Loans denies the Direct (Parent) PLUS Loan, then the student may be eligible to apply for the Additional Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. The annual loan limits for this loan would be the same as for an independent student.

The parent borrower and dependent student must first apply for the Federal Direct PLUS Loan and, if denied, then the student can apply for the Additional Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan.

Additional Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan Due to Direct PLUS Denial Requirements:

1. Parent borrower must apply for the Federal Direct PLUS Loan. The Direct PLUS parent applicant must apply for the Direct PLUS Loan. See the Federal Direct PLUS (Parent) Loan and select the appropriate time period, under "How To Apply" / Undergraduate Students / Self Help Center on MSU's Student Financial Aid web site: www.sfa.msstate.edu. Follow and complete the steps to apply for the Federal Direct PLUS Loan.

2. Federal Direct Student Loans denies the Direct PLUS Loan and sends a denial notice to MSU. MSU receives the Direct PLUS Loan application results from Federal Direct Student Loan and, if denied, updates the Direct PLUS Loan record on file.
