    The Office of Admissions and Scholarships is responsible for admitting students and processing scholarships including the Sumners Scholarship.

    Graduate Assistantships and Fellowships are not administered by the Department of Student Financial Aid. Click here for information and application procedures provided by the Office of the Graduate School.

    Waivers and Tuition Remission for employees are not administered by the Department of Student financial Aid. Click here for tuition remission information for employees provided by the Department of Human Resources Management.

    Federal Student Aid (Work and Loans)
    • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You may submit the FAFSA to the federal processor by filing a paper FAFSA or by filing electronically through the Internet by using FAFSA on the Web. We recommend that you file your FAFSA over the web.

    • If interested in a student loan and/or work-study be sure to check these boxes on the FAFSA.
    • Apply each year as soon as possible after January 1st for the upcoming school year.
    • MSU's Federal School Code is 002423.
    Note: Approximately 30% of all applications each year will be selected by the federal processor for a process of review called verification. If your application is selected you will be notified and you must submit the following documents to the Department of Student Financial Aid at MSU:
    • Signed copy of your (and your spouses', if married) 2004 Federal Income Tax Return
    • Completed 2005-2006 Verification Worksheet(Coming Soon)
    In addition, the processor will perform database matches by comparing your application data with the Social Security Administration, Immigration and Naturalization Service, Selective Service, National Student Loan Data System, and others. Depending on the outcome of these database matches, you may be required to submit additional documentation to MSU.

    State Student Financial Aid (for residents of Mississippi only)
    Several student financial aid programs are offered by the state of Mississippi through the Mississippi Office of Student Financial Aid in Jackson, MS. Some of these programs are offered specifically for teacher education majors, nursing majors, medical students and dental students.     Step 2: Confirm - that your application was received Top of page

  • Federal student aid applicants will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) as a result of filing the FAFSA.(Students who file the FAFSA over the web will receive an email message from the Federal Processor directing them to their SAR online.) Review the information on the SAR for accuracy and to be sure Mississippi State University is listed as a college to receive your FAFSA results. Submit additional documents if required.

  • The Mississippi Office of Student financial Aid in Jackson will notify you of state aid awards. If you are unsure call 1-800-327-2980 for updates.

  • Contact the Office of the Graduate School for updates regarding Graduate Assistantships/Fellowships.

  • Application status updates for Federal Student Aid applicants can be viewed on-line by using your MSU NetPassword and the MSU Intranet at https://mybanner.msstate.edu. (this on-line status update capability will not be available until late February or early March).

  • Step 3: Finalize - Award Notification/Loan Processes Top of page

    As soon as each student is awarded federal student aid funds the Department of Student Financial Aid will notify the applicant of the award as follows:
    • Currently enrolled students or new students who have been issued an official MSU E-mail Address and a MSU NetPassword will receive an electronic notification that will direct them to Bannerweb. By using the MSU NetPassword students can then accept or decline awards and complete the Supplemental Information Form on line.
    • Students who have not yet been issued an official MSU E-mail Address or MSU NetPassword will receive a paper Award Notification and Supplemental Information Form through the U. S. Postal Service. (A Supplemental Information Form is required of all federal student aid recipients.) These documents must be completed and returned to MSU before the award process can be finalized.

    Step 4: Receive - Student Aid Funds Top of page

  • Sumner Scholarship funds awarded by the Office of Admissions and Scholarships that have been finalized will be disbursed into your MSU Student Account during the final registration process (two days prior to the beginning of classes each semester).

  • Federal Work-Study funds will not be available at the beginning of the semester for payment of fees. Students will be paid twice per month for the hours actually worked during the previous work period. All students awarded FWS must come to the Student Employment Office in Garner Hall to receive an interview form at the beginning of each semester. This form must be presented by the student to potential employers. If hired, the form must be filled out completely by the student and employer and returned to the Student Employment Office before actual work begins.

  • State aid funds may or may not be available at registration, depending on your application and award status at the Mississippi Office of Student Financial Aid in Jackson, MS.

  • Contact the Office of the Graduate School and/or the Office of Sponsored Students in the Controllers area for disbursement information on Waivers and Assistantships/Fellowships.

  • No student aid funds can be disbursed into the MSU Student Account until the student has registered for the required number of classes/credit hours.

  • All student aid funds (except Federal Work-Study) that are disbursed into the student's MSU Student Account will first be applied to the amount owed to MSU by the student. If the disbursed student aid funds exceed the amount owed to MSU, then a refund/disbursement check will be issued to the student upon request at the Account Services Office in Garner Hall no sooner than the first day of final registration (approximately two days before classes begin each semester).
